Bird banding at Meads Quarry puts songbirds in gloved hands for five dollars Sunday morning
Behind the scenes at the banding station.

The Ijams community science team runs a bird banding station in the woods behind Meads Quarry, and a few mornings a season it lets the public in. Sunday's is one: at eight the group meets in the quarry lot, walks five minutes to the station and watches migratory and resident songbirds safely netted, measured, banded and released, the data going toward the health of the birds around South Knoxville. Five dollars is the whole ticket, it is ninety minutes, and November is late migration, so the nets catch the birds that stay. It is 41 at dawn Sunday and clear.
