Scruffy Roots Fest is WDVX's free, all-day festival of East Tennessee Americana, and this year it is on the lawn at Kern's. Gates open at noon on Sunday, the music runs from one to seven thirty, and nobody pays to get in. Six acts play: Crawdaddy Jones, Free Rein Bluegrass, Lazarus Lake, EmiSunshine, Big Pink and The Dirty Gospel.
Two names from the lineup
Kern's own post singles out two of them. Lazarus Lake is the Knoxville alt-country band led by singer-songwriter Michael Jones, whose debut LP Family Tree came out last year and whose new single, Long Distance Call, with LB Beistad, is in rotation on WDVX. EmiSunshine has been performing since she was four, is twenty-two now, and has played the Grand Ole Opry sixteen times.
The practical part
Bring a lawn chair and plan to stay a while; vendors, food and drinks are on site, and the food hall behind the lawn is open nine to nine on Sunday. The forecast is partly sunny and 79 with a 40 percent chance of a shower, so a rain layer in the car is a fair bet. The Titans kick off at one in Nashville if someone in your party needs a screen; the bars inside have them.
