A Big Day, in birding, is a race against the clock to see or hear as many species as possible. Ijams Nature Center's October version is gentler: two hours on the trails with a naturalist, learning to bird by sight and sound during fall migration and recording what you find on the eBird app. The program is written for complete beginners and for people who already keep a list.
It is fifteen dollars, for ages fourteen and up, and covers up to two and a half miles of uneven trail with plenty of stops. Parking is free for participants. Arrive five to ten minutes early at the Visitor Center. Saturday starts sunny and cool, the best birding light of the week.
