Old Sevier Market, the grocery store on Sevier Avenue, opens Saturday

South Knoxville gets a neighborhood grocery. The store the district has been counting down to opens its doors October 10, and for its first month fifteen percent of every purchase buys food for people in Knoxville who need it.

Weather
Partly sunny and 82 Saturday · a slight chance of a shower after 2 PM

Sevier Avenue has restaurants, breweries, a bakery, a theater and, as of last Friday, a music venue. What it has not had is a place to buy an onion. That changes Saturday, when Old Sevier Market opens for the first time. The store has been posting a countdown since October 1, and the Old Sevier District put the opening at the top of its October can't-miss list, calling it long-awaited.

What's on the shelves

The owners describe the mission in three words, procure, curate, create, and the plan in plainer ones: fresh, good groceries at prices the neighborhood can pay, with the basics you need and the novelties you want. The posts from inside the store this month show the produce islands going in, a home for potatoes, onions and apples, shelves stocked with baking and school supplies, and dairy and frozen cases filled. The store says its range will run from the lettuce in your salad to local artisan honey for your latte. It is a member of the Old Sevier merchants' group and says it will work with the district's other businesses and with local artists and farmers.

The first month gives back

For the first month the store is open, fifteen percent of every purchase goes toward food for people in Knoxville who need it. The store's own example: a hundred-dollar grocery trip funds fifteen dollars of donated food. Opening day is Saturday, the listed hours are seven in the morning to seven at night, and the forecast is partly sunny and 82, with only a slight chance of a shower in the afternoon.

Scruffy Roots Fest puts six Americana acts on the Kern's lawn Sunday, free

Six acts, one lawn, no ticket

Scruffy Roots Fest is WDVX's free, all-day festival of East Tennessee Americana, and this year it is on the lawn at Kern's. Gates open at noon on Sunday, the music runs from one to seven thirty, and nobody pays to get in. Six acts play: Crawdaddy Jones, Free Rein Bluegrass, Lazarus Lake, EmiSunshine, Big Pink and The Dirty Gospel.

Two names from the lineup

Kern's own post singles out two of them. Lazarus Lake is the Knoxville alt-country band led by singer-songwriter Michael Jones, whose debut LP Family Tree came out last year and whose new single, Long Distance Call, with LB Beistad, is in rotation on WDVX. EmiSunshine has been performing since she was four, is twenty-two now, and has played the Grand Ole Opry sixteen times.

The practical part

Bring a lawn chair and plan to stay a while; vendors, food and drinks are on site, and the food hall behind the lawn is open nine to nine on Sunday. The forecast is partly sunny and 79 with a 40 percent chance of a shower, so a rain layer in the car is a fair bet. The Titans kick off at one in Nashville if someone in your party needs a screen; the bars inside have them.

KNOX-ILL, Printshop's graffiti day, puts spray-can writers to work live for twelve hours Saturday

The brewery's annual day for graffiti writers is back on Island Home Avenue: artists paint live from ten in the morning to ten at night, with a lager brewed for the occasion.

When
Sat Oct 10 · 10 AM – 10 PM
Where
Printshop Beer Co. · 1532 Island Home Ave
What it is
Live spray painting by graffiti writers, all day, while the taproom pours · the brewery has run it since at least 2022
The beer

Also Saturday
Fish fry, 3 – 8 PM · yoga in the warehouse at 10:30
Rest of the week
Thu $1 wings with Friends BBQ 5 – 9 and 10% off cases · Fri $12 flights all day · Sun the vegan barbecue pop-up
Weather
Partly sunny and 82 · a slight chance of a shower after 2 PM
Another day of sprays, as the brewery puts it

KNOX-ILL is a graffiti event, not a paint-and-sip. Printshop's calendar puts it in one line, "Knox-Ill is back, with another day of sprays," and the photo on the listing says the rest: a writer bent over a blackbook, the sketchbook graffiti artists carry, with a marker in his hand and a can of Knox-Ill Writer's Brew at his elbow. "Writer" is the word graffiti artists use for themselves. For twelve hours on Saturday, ten in the morning to ten at night, they paint live on the brewery's property on Island Home Avenue while the taps pour.

The brewery has done this before

It is a standing date. Printshop brewed a Citra IPA as "the official beer of Knox-Ill 2022," and this year's edition comes with its own can again: Knox-Ill Writer's Brew, a 5.4 percent dark lager with toffee notes, brewed and canned in South Knoxville. The Old Sevier District put the day on its October can't-miss list alongside the grocery opening up the street.

What to expect

Come to watch; the painting is the show, and it runs all day, so there is no start time to miss. The brewery stacks the rest of Saturday around it: a yoga class in the warehouse at ten thirty, then a fish fry from three to eight. The weather is on the painters' side, partly sunny and 82 with only a slight chance of a shower after two.

The 10K
A figure-eight to the top of View Park · one aid station
Weather
Sunny start, partly sunny and 82 by afternoon
Thirty-one miles, no repeats

Knox County has never had a trail 50K. It gets one Saturday morning, when the Urban Wilderness 50K leaves the Gateway Park at the end of James White Parkway at 7:30 and heads out on a thirty-one-mile loop that touches four city parks, a wildlife management area and three pieces of private trail land, Ijams Nature Center, the Drop Inn and the Helix trails among them. The organizers put the climbing at close to four thousand feet. A 10K leaves the same line at nine and runs a figure-eight up to View Park for the look at Chilhowee Mountain and the Smokies.

Where the course goes

The race's own description of the opening miles: a half mile of greenway to spread the field out, the first climb of the day up Red Bud, a descent through Rendezvous past the Drop Inn cabins, then into Ijams Nature Center for the rolling climbs on Burnett Ridge and Ross Marble and a gentle stretch through the Hickory Loop. If you are out on those trails Saturday morning, expect runners, and give them the line.

The practical part

Registration closes Wednesday, October 7, at 11:59 PM, and the race shirt deadline has already passed. Packet pickup is Friday from four to eight at SouthSide Garage on Sevier Avenue, which the race prefers to the race-morning line; bibs are also available at the start from 6:30 until fifteen minutes before each gun. Volunteers sign up through the same site.

The first sell-out on Sevier Avenue

The 808 opened on Sevier Avenue on Friday with High Step Society and followed it with Marcy Playground on Saturday. Its first midweek show is also its first sell-out: Paul Oakenfold and The Crystal Method on the Mission Underground tour, Thursday, doors at seven and music at eight, eighteen and up. The venue announced the sell-out last week and thanked the buyers for selling out the grand opening show, adding that some tickets might come back as things change.

For the rest of the neighborhood, a sold-out room at 808 Sevier means a full street. The venue is blunt about the Borderland Tees lot next door: do not park there, you will be towed. It suggests a rideshare. The district's public options are the Riverwalk Garage at the west end and the gravel lot under the James White Parkway bridge at the east end.

It joins Naomi Haverland's Shiny Objects, which was finished last month.

The art is already off the walls, too. Two large-scale sculptures by Nathan Pierce and Brian Ferriby are now installed along the trail, and Legacy Parks promises more sections of trail, more murals and more sculptures in the coming weeks.
