The Old Sevier District has thrown pub crawls and a Pride on Sevier Avenue, but Friday is the first time it is closing part of the street for the kids. Spooky Streets, posted by the merchants' association last Wednesday, runs from five to seven thirty on October 23: trick-or-treating at the businesses up and down the avenue, with the pedestrian-only stretch marked on the event map, and a line of family activities in between. Admission is free, and the association is calling it a community-wide celebration with the United Way of Greater Knoxville and the South Knox Elementary PTO.
Up and down the avenue
The district's post lists a bounce house, face painting, crafts, games and a dance party with DJ LL, plus more than a dozen local vendors selling handmade goods, vintage finds, jewelry, books and sweets along the route. The map on the second slide marks the stops: shops and restaurants on both sides of Sevier, a trunk-or-treat with a hot dog truck and balloon animals at City Church, and the blocks where cars are out and costumes are in. Redbud Kitchen is in on it with a dinner deal: buy an adult entrée during the event and a kids' meal is half off.
The practical part
With the avenue partly closed, plan to park once and walk. The district's own parking page points to the Riverwalk Garage at the west end, the gravel lot under the James White Parkway bridge at the east end, the public lot at the east end of Suttree Landing Park and street parking on the side streets. It is sunny and 73 on Friday and drops through the 50s once the sun goes down, so a layer under the costume. If the kids are done by seven thirty and the grown-ups are not, the Borderland Playhouse curtain on the same block moved to eight for the night, and the Pink Cactus goes drum and bass at nine.
