Sunny and 68 · a cold front comes through Friday night, so the first real fall afternoon

Kern's has been using its lawn hard this month, with a free Americana festival last Sunday and a movie night Wednesday, and the biggest of the lot is the Fall Festival this Sunday afternoon. The food hall's own posts call it a full day on the lawn: a live schedule from two to four, a market of local makers, pumpkin painting, axe throwing and face painting, with free admission. Its Sunday post put it in three words, crisp air, live tunes, line dancing.

The two o'clock lesson

The afternoon opens at two with an hour of line dancing led by Cowtown Studios, the same crew that runs the Friday-night Ho'Down Socials at Kern's, so this is the daytime, all-ages version. Nobody needs a partner or boots. At 3:15 the stage goes to School of Rock, the music school whose student bands play real sets, for forty-five minutes. In between and around it, the pumpkins get painted and the axes get thrown.

The practical part

Admission is free and the food hall behind the lawn is open nine to nine, so lunch, a seasonal beer and dessert are all inside. Eleven vendors are on the list, from cookies and vinyl records to a boutique and a family farm. The cold front that comes through Friday night leaves Sunday sunny and 68, which is sweater weather for the first time this fall; bring a blanket for the grass. The Titans play in Indianapolis at one if someone in your party needs a screen, and the bars inside have them.

Pup-O-Ween puts dogs in costume on a runway at Hi-Wire Sunday, five dollars a dog for a rescue

Spookiest Pooch is one of three categories

The Old Sevier District's Halloween lineup, posted on the first of the month, lists Pup-O-Ween at Hi-Wire for October 18, and the brewery's own ticket page fills in the rest: a dog costume contest on the taproom deck from two to five on Sunday, with check-in from two to a quarter of three and the runway at three. Entry is five dollars a dog, and all of it goes to Small Breed Rescue of East Tennessee, the all-volunteer group that places displaced and abandoned small dogs.

Three categories, one runway

Dogs compete in three categories: Spookiest Pooch for the Halloween-spirited, Most Creative Canine for the original, and Dynamic Duo for a dog and owner in coordinated costumes. Cassie Krause Photography, which shoots pets for a living, runs a Halloween photo booth. The brewery's rules are the usual ones: every breed is welcome, every dog stays on a leash and on its best behavior, and you ask before you pet someone else's.

The practical part

Watching costs nothing, and the taproom is open noon to nine on Sunday with twenty taps, two decks and food ordered from Redbud Kitchen downstairs. It is sunny and 68, so the covered deck and the rooftop one both work. If you are coming from the Fall Festival at Kern's, the runway at three lands in the middle of the line-dancing hour; pick one and walk to the other.

Goodbye June and Danny Worsnop bring a blues-rock double bill to The 808 Friday

The venue's post promises blues and rock

The 808 opened on the first weekend of October and sold out its second show, so a Friday-night rock bill is the venue settling into a rhythm. Goodbye June and Danny Worsnop share the stage on October 16; the venue's own post bills it as their unique blend of blues and rock. The schedule on 808knox.com puts the show at seven, eighteen and up, with tickets on the site.

Before you go

Two things from the venue's feed this past week. Average Wieners now sets up on the patio at every show, so dinner can be a hot dog between sets. And parking: the venue posted a map, and the Ear redrew it as its own story below, with the lots, the street spots, and the two places not to park. The Parking row above links to it.

Classic country, after the game

All My Exes Live in Texas: Classic Country Night is how The 808's schedule lists Saturday, doors at seven and the show at eight, eighteen and up. After an opening fortnight of touring acts, this is the room doing a theme night of its own, the old songs played for a dance floor. The venue's earlier announcement promised dance lessons with it, so nobody has to already know a two-step.

The game ends first

Alabama kicks off at Neyland at 3:30 Saturday, which puts the final whistle somewhere around seven, the same minute the doors open on Sevier Avenue. The bridge traffic will be heavy at exactly that hour; walking over from a game-day room in Old Sevier is faster than driving anything. Average Wieners is on the patio, and the parking map in the story below says where the car goes; the Parking row above links to it.

The 808 posts a parking map: lots and street parking around Sevier Avenue, and the two places not to park

Alabama at Tennessee ends around 7, as the doors open · the bridge will be slow

The 808 opened on October 2 in a building that fronts Sevier Avenue with no parking lot of its own, and its first sold-out night taught the neighborhood where cars end up. Last Wednesday the venue posted a two-slide parking map and one request. The map above is that map redrawn: green curb marks are street parking in marked spaces, not whole streets; a P is a lot, a $ a paid one, an X a place not to park. Click or tap it to open it full screen and zoom in.

Where the green is

Closest are three lots the map marks around the door: the lot at Sevier Avenue and Davenport Road, the HoneyBee free lot behind the coffee shop across the avenue, and the Johnson Architecture lot south of the venue off Davenport, which is a paid lot. The street parking the map marks is on Langford and Phillips Avenues, the two residential blocks between Sevier and the river, where posted signs and resident-permit rules apply, and farther west along Sevier near Council Place, where two more lots sit. For the overflow, the map points down Island Home Avenue to the public lot under the James White Parkway, where it crosses the avenue just past Trailhead Beer Market; from there it is about a fifteen-minute walk back to the door. The city's public lot at Suttree Landing is on the way and works too.

Where the rust is

Two places. The Borderland Tees lot, the private lot immediately west of The 808, which the venue has warned about since opening weekend and which tows; the detail panel on the map shows exactly which parcel it is. And the apartments on the river side of Island Home Avenue across from Trailhead Beer Market, which is the one request in the venue's caption: please refrain from parking across from Trailhead. Saturday adds a wrinkle: Alabama at Tennessee kicks off at 3:30 and ends about when the doors open at seven, so the bridge and Sevier Avenue will be full of game traffic at exactly the wrong moment. The lots reached from the Island Home side avoid most of it.

First Bass and Planet Doom, two of the promoters behind Knoxville's bass-music nights, take over The Pink Cactus on Saturday from eight until one in the morning. The Pink Cactus put it on its October list at the end of September, and the promoters' post has the detail: ten DJs across two stages, twenty dollars at the door, eighteen and up.

More than a dance floor

The post lists vendors, a tie-dye station and a harm-reduction table alongside the music, which makes it closer to a small festival than a club night. The bar downstairs serves Latin-inspired food and cocktails, the front-yard patio has covered seating for a breather, and the private karaoke rooms upstairs are their own thing. The cold front has come through by then: a clear night falling to 40, so a jacket for the patio.

His own post calls it the warm-up before the release show in Nashville: come through, hear what I've been building. Local support comes from Kaspar and ro4l.

At the lounge

Fly by Night's October lineup post lists the night alongside a Thursday of disco and house and a Halloween ball at the end of the month, and the bar is running creepy cocktails all October. The lounge opens at four on Saturdays and runs until one; neither the venue nor the artist has posted a set time, so plan on a night-time show and ask at the bar.

A warm night for it

Thursday is the last of the warm days, sunny and 86 with a night in the low sixties, before the cold front arrives Friday. The bar has creepy cocktails on all month and opens at four, so dinner on the avenue, then the lounge at nine. The free hour in the karaoke rooms up the street at The Pink Cactus runs every Thursday in October, if the night wants a second act.

A three-mile social run leaves Printshop at six Thursday, with dollar wings waiting at the end

The run's organizer posted the plan on the Printshop feed: Thursday, October 15 at six, a three-mile run on the greenway toward Ijams Nature Center, a mile and a half out and back, because the SoKno Rail Trail and Art Walk isn't quite ready for us yet. Park in the public lot under the bridge next to Mighty Mud, not at the brewery. All paces welcome.

Why they run from a brewery

It is a Knoxville Track Club trail-running social, a way into the club's upcoming trail races, a November one at Norris Dam State Park and a December one on the South Loop, over a beer afterward. The beer is Printshop's, and Thursday is wing night: Friends BBQ runs the smoker from five to nine with dollar wings, and the brewery takes ten percent off cases to go. It is sunny and 86, the last hot day of the week, so the run will be warm and the patio on the river after it will be the reward.

The band played the free Scruffy Roots Fest on the Kern's lawn last Sunday, so this is the follow-up for anyone who caught a set there and wanted a closer one, on a beer market's patio a few blocks away.

Soup season at the kitchen

Gato Peligroso, the kitchen at Trailhead, posted a new menu last week with a chile relleno smash burger, and said the scotch bonnets are in from the garden, which means the jerk chicken is back. Friday is the day the weather turns: mostly sunny and 80 in the afternoon, then the cold front, with a slight chance of a shower before eight and a low of 46. The last line of the weekend on Trailhead's October flyer is Greg Horne, Sunday, October 18, with Sunday music starting at four. Horne is a Knoxville songwriter who plays more instruments than most bands carry, and the Sunday patio slot at Trailhead is built for that kind of set: a beer, a chair, the sun going down behind Island Home Avenue.

The Sunday shape

It lines up with the rest of the day. The Fall Festival on the Kern's lawn runs two to four, the bluegrass jam at Mead's Quarry goes until five, and Trailhead is between the two; four o'clock is when the festival crowd is looking for somewhere to sit. Gato Peligroso's new fall menu is in the kitchen. Sunny and 68, with no front to worry about this time.

The same crew, twice

Cowtown Studios is the dance school running the two o'clock line-dancing hour at Sunday's Fall Festival on the same lawn, so a Friday night here is the long version and Sunday the sampler. Peter's Market Bar is the lawn-side bar; the food hall has twenty-odd vendors for dinner first. Ijams Nature Center runs its Starlight Paddle twice this weekend, Friday and Saturday from seven to nine, out of the River Landing on Island Home Pike. Forty-five dollars, ages fourteen and up, with anyone under eighteen bringing an adult.

Friday or Saturday

The two nights are different nights. Friday is when the cold front crosses, with a slight chance of a shower before eight and the temperature falling toward 46. Saturday is behind it: clear, calm and cold, 40 by the end, with the best sky of the month. Kayaks, life jackets and headlamps are provided; warm layers, water and the once-a-year online waiver are on you. If a morning suits better, the Early Bird Paddle goes out Sunday from nine to eleven, same price, same landing, in the fall color.

The East Tennessee Bluegrass Association and Ijams Nature Center run a community jam on the third Sunday of every month, and the listing for October 18 is emphatic about one thing: this event will be held at Mead's Quarry, not up at the visitor center. Two to five, all skill levels. The first hour is the beginner jam, and from three the circle opens to every jammer who shows up.

Acoustic bluegrass instruments only, which the listing clarifies as no harmonicas or spoons at this time. Not a musician? The listing says come out and enjoy the music anyway; it is always free and open to the public. Stories, crafts and the playscape, ten to noon

Storytime at the Ijams Nature Playscape runs every Saturday from ten to noon, and this week's theme is birds. Volunteer storytellers read a selection of books out in the woods, there is a themed craft, and the rest of the morning is the playscape itself, the natural play area at Grayson Subaru Preserve by Mead's Quarry. It is free; parking is five dollars a car, or nothing for members.

The cold morning

Saturday is the first real fall morning of the season, 40 at dawn and sunny, climbing to 62 by lunch, so this is a jackets-and-hats storytime. Park in the Mead's Quarry main or overflow lot and follow the signs along the short connector trail. An RSVP is not required but helps if the weather cancels it, and after last week's bird-count hike, the birds themselves should be around to point at.

ScruffyCat and ScrappyKitty is a Knoxville mountain bike adventure put on by Darkhorse Race Productions on Saturday, October 17, and the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club's listing of it asks the right question first: is it a party, a challenge, an adventure? That's up to you. What is promised is a proper tour of Knoxville's Urban Wilderness, the dirty south, and beyond, and a party with bike friends into the night.

Three cats

The ScruffyCat was born of the idea of riding all the Knoxville trails in one route, and it happens to come out at about a hundred miles, new trail to old goat paths, linked by the best road connections through town. The ScrappyKitty is the fifty-mile sampler. The SuperKitten, twenty-five miles, is a tour of the Urban Wilderness highlights, created for younger cats or, as the listing says, the most sensible sorts. None of it is a marked course with aid stations: riders are self-sufficient, with GPX routes, maps for the tricky spots, a list of water stops and a good chance of trail magic.

The practical part

It starts from 3000 McClure Lane, and the finish is snacks, drinks, home-cooked food and a bonfire, with a social ride on Sunday to the one area of trail the hundred-miler misses. Start times and the rest of the details go out by email to people who register, and the organizers ask for that registration soon because the food is bought by headcount. Saturday is sunny and 62 with a 40-degree start, which is about perfect for a long day on a bike. If you are hiking Saturday, expect riders on every trail in the system.

Catalyst Sports runs an adaptive mountain bike program in Knoxville, and its October ride is Saturday, October 17 from 9:30 to noon at Baker Creek Preserve, the trailhead off Sevier Heights Road. The listing on the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club's calendar says to meet on the right side of the building complex and parking lot, and to register at catalystsports.org/knoxville, choosing an adaptive bike when you sign up if you need one reserved.

Riders and volunteers

Registration opens two weeks before each ride, so it is open now, and the program needs volunteers for every ride as much as it needs riders; the same form covers both. The rest of the 2026 calendar is the AMBC Fall Fest weekend in November and the Tour de Lights in December. Saturday morning is sunny and cold, 40 at the start and 62 by noon, and the ScruffyCat riders will be on the Baker Creek trails the same morning, so give a wave.
