Hi-Wire runs pint night on top of an all-day happy hour every Thursday

Second floor, Barber Street

Hi-Wire's Knoxville taproom takes up the whole second floor of the building at 2020 Barber Street, a block off Sevier Avenue, and Thursday is the day it makes its strongest case: the standing pint night sits on top of an all-day happy hour, so the discount doesn't wait for an evening window.

What's up there

Twenty Hi-Wire taps, from flagships through sour and wild ales, plus draft cocktails, liquor slushies, wine, cider, and non-alcoholic options for whoever drove. Ping pong, foosball, and a Stern pinball machine. Ten thousand square feet, murals on every wall, and two outdoor decks — one covered, one on the roof with the view.

Dinner solves itself

There's no kitchen upstairs and there doesn't need to be. You order from Redbud Kitchen on the ground floor, they text you, you carry it back up. Outside food is welcome too, just not outside drinks. Doors at three, last call at ten.

A note on the roof deck

Thursday's forecast high is near 97. The rooftop is the best seat in the building for about eleven months of the year, and this is not one of those days until the sun is well down — the indoor floor is enormous, and that is where the pinball is anyway. Hi-Wire's Knoxville events page still wasn't loading anything publicly as of Tuesday, so a one-off on their calendar may not be visible; the hours and the standing Thursday deals above come from the taproom's own page.

Tennessee's home opener kicks off Saturday at 3:30, and from this side of the river you can walk to the shuttle

The Vols host Furman in the first home game of the season, in the mid-90s. Most of what you have read about the new traffic plan is not actually new — but the shuttle that starts a short walk over the Gay Street Bridge is the best thing on offer, and it costs ten dollars.

Ijams Park walks you out into the dark on Thursday to meet a hundred thousand bats

Ijams After Dark: All About Bats runs 8 to 9:30 Thursday night — a naturalist, a mile and a half of trail, blacklight stations, and a purpose-built bat house standing where the lime kilns used to be.

"All Dogs Go to Heaven" plays on the Visitor Center lawn at Ijams Park on Friday night

Movies Under the Stars has one more September date after this one. Doors at seven, film around half past eight, twelve dollars — and dogs are welcome, which for this particular film is either very sweet or slightly pointed.

Puckers gets its first Vols Saturday, and the patio looks straight across at the stadium

The sports grill that took the old Mimosas room calls itself a game day headquarters, and the geography backs it up: from the patio you can see Neyland across the river, and the walking crowd goes right past. Reservations are open on Resy.

Kern's will rent you a private game day section on Saturday, and it has published the price

Three hundred dollars gets twenty people a canopy, a television and two couches on the lawn. Twenty-five hundred takes the small rooftop for seventy-five. The rest of the food hall is still free to walk into.

Somebody reads out loud under the trees at the Ijams Nature Playscape on Saturday morning, and it's free

Two hours at the Playscape out by Mead's Quarry — a story in a shady spot, sometimes a hands-on nature project, and small kids otherwise left to roam. On a 95-degree Saturday, the morning shade is the point.
