The bracket is down to eight, and the quarterfinal slate is a good one: France–Morocco on Thursday, Spain–Belgium on Friday, then a Saturday double of Norway–England and the reigning champs Argentina against Switzerland at night.

Kern's has been running World Cup watch parties all summer — featured matchdays with OneKnox — and the big outdoor screen has been the neighborhood's tournament HQ since the group stage. Check with Kern's for which matches make the big screen this week, and get there early for the Saturday night one.

Terror in the Woods: scary movies under the Ijams Park stars

Friday night the Movies Under the Stars series goes horror — a Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Wrong Turn double feature on the lawn, with a haunted trail, food trucks, and a beer garden.

When
Fri, Jul 10 · doors 7 PM, films at dark
Where
Ijams Park, 2915 Island Home Ave
Extras
Haunted trail · food trucks · beer garden
Note
Advance tickets urged — it sells out
Bring a blanket. And a buddy.

For one night a year, the friendliest lawn in South Knoxville gets deliberately creepy. Ijams Park and Central Cinema's Movies Under the Stars — now in its fourteenth year — trades family fare for a horror double feature: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Wrong Turn, back to back under the trees, which is exactly where those movies want you watching them.

Doors open at seven; the films roll at dark, around nine. Between them you've got a FrightWorks haunted trail through the woods, food trucks, and a beer garden for steadying the nerves. Fair warning on both counts: this one's not for the littles, and past Terror nights have sold out — grab tickets ahead.

The Sevier Ave rezoning gets its hearing — and staff says no

Thursday afternoon the Planning Commission takes up two South Knoxville land-use fights: the 2704 Sevier Ave rezoning we flagged in June, and the Kerbela-site apartments on the bluff.

When
Thu, Jul 9 · 1:30 PM
Where
Main Assembly Room, City-County Building, 400 Main St

2704 Sevier Ave (No. 9) · 315 Kerbela Ave (No. 22)
Thursday, 1:30, downtown

Back in June we flagged a quiet request to take 2704 Sevier Avenue from single-family residential to neighborhood commercial. Thursday it finally gets its hearing — and Planning staff is recommending denial, writing that it would push commercial use into an established residential block that already has commercial nodes within six hundred feet in both directions. No public comments had been filed as of Tuesday.

Later on the same agenda comes a bigger one: the roughly 220-unit, 55-and-up apartment project proposed for the old Kerbela Shriners Temple site at 315 Kerbela Avenue, postponed since April. That one has drawn nine public comments — seven opposed, including formal denial requests from the Knox Community Planning Alliance and City Church — over public access, design, and fit with the South Waterfront Vision Plan.

Both are the kind of afternoon decisions that shape the neighborhood for decades. The meeting's open to the public if you want to watch it happen.

A warbler, up close

One of the quietest wonders in the city is back on the calendar: Sunday morning, researchers at Ijams Park gently net wild songbirds, fit each with a tiny numbered band, take a few measurements, and let them go — real science, and a once-in-a-while chance to see a warbler from two feet away.

It starts at 7:30 and the birds set the schedule, so bring coffee and a little patience. All ages welcome.

A neighborly note on this one: it came to the Ear by phone — someone rang the intake line, the system wrote it up, and the city desk confirmed the details. That's exactly how it's supposed to work. Got a special or an event of your own? Call it in or use the form on this page.
